What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery, called reduction mammoplasty, can also be performed for medical reasons, except for having an aesthetic appearance. Due to the fact that the breasts are many times larger than normal; it is also a type of plastic surgery performed for various reasons, such as intense sagging, a bad aesthetic image, an asymmetric image, an inability to find a suitable bra or clothing. Another disadvantage of having large breasts is frequent diaper rash or even a wound under the breast, low shoulder caused by a large breast – hump, inability to exercise, having a fat appearance. Large breasts, which also cause neck-back pain, also negatively affect the daily life of individuals. Large breasts that affect daily mobility, the pregnancy process and breastfeeding period are growing even more and can never return to their former state. Breast reduction surgeries are also performed in order to get rid of all the negatives in question. The main goal in reduction operations is to get the breasts to the desired size and symmetrical image with the lightest possible surgical scar.

How Is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

Breast reduction surgery is possible by removing both excess skin and yap tissue from large breasts. It is a surgical procedure for women aged 20 and over. It is essential to complete both the hormonal system and physical development. For this reason, it is not done to women under the age of 18 – 20. It is only performed under the age of 18 to 20 in cases where medical – emergency necessity is required. During the operation, both sedation and anesthesia drugs are given to the patient. Breast reduction surgery is completed in an average of 2 hours, and the operation time of much larger breasts can last up to 4 hours.

During breast reduction surgery, one of the methods of Lollipop incision or reverse t incision is preferred. Factors that will affect the determination of the technique vary according to various criteria, such as existing breast tissue, breast size ratio, skin condition and structure, position of the nipple, distance between the nipple and hip. In the Lollipop incision technique, the area where the nipple is cut circular and excess tissue is removed in the area. If necessary, the nipple is taken to a higher position. During this process, maximum care and attention are paid to ensure that the milk ducts are not destroyed. Then the process of closing the skin begins. In order for the healing process to go quickly and comfortably, a drain is placed in the skin closure step to ensure that the blood contained in the inner part can be easily emptied.

In the reverse T technique, an inverted
T-shaped surgical incision is positioned in the invisible lower area of the
breast. All excess breast tissue and fat are taken from this area. Again, steps
to change the position of the nipple are also performed if it is considered
necessary. In the same way, the operation site is closed by placing a drain so
that the blood does not collect under the skin. After breast reduction surgery,
patients are discharged after spending the first 24 hours in the hospital. The
scar breast reduction surgery are quite mild. But if the breast to be reduced
is too large, the surgical scar may be a little more pronounced.

The operation that allows for the removal of extra fat, skin, and breast tissue, the internal reshaping of the new smaller breast, and the lifting of the breast into a more youthful position. Furthermore, this technique requires two incision sites: one along the areola’s edge and another going vertically from the bottom of the areola to the inframammary fold, or the crease beneath the breast.
