What Is Ellipse Balloon?
It is also called an ingestible stomach balloon or stomach balloon pill. Just like other stomach balloons, it has properties that reduce the volume of the stomach, provide a feeling of satiety for longer with small portions, and slow down the passage of food from the stomach to the intestines. It can be easily applied to any patient with a body mass index of 27 and above.
The differences of the Ellipse balloon from other stomach balloons are as follows;
- It does not need endoscopy to be inserted.
- It can be easily swallowed with water.
- It also does not need removal.
- It has an average lifespan of 4 months and is spontaneously removed from the digestive system at the end of this period.
The advantages offered by the Ellipse stomach balloon are like other types of stomach balloons. For example;
- Ameliyatsız zayıflama imkanı sunar.
- Sağlıklı – dengeli beslenme alışkanlıkları edinmeye yardımcı olur.
- Obezitenin ilerlemesinin engellenmesine, durdurulmasına, yok edilmesine destek olur.

How is Ellipse balloon performed?
Developed in ingestible form, the balloon is swallowed with the help of water. The catheter filling chamber connected to the stomach balloon, which is in the form of capsules, is of a size that can be easily swallowed with water. Then an X-ray of the capsule’s position in the stomach is taken through an Abdominal X-Ray performed by the doctor. After this stage, where the position of the capsule in the stomach is checked, the stomach balloon is inflated by the doctor, if appropriate. The catheter attached to the capsule swallowed with water is slowly pulled out of the mouth canal after inflating the stomach balloon.
In this way, the application of an ellipse stomach balloon does not exceed a total of 20 minutes. Endoscopy is not required during the procedure. At the same time, sedation or anesthetic drugs are not given to the patient. It is often preferred by individuals who are afraid of surgery, who are undesirable to take anesthetic drugs, or who are sensitive to anesthetic drugs. Ellipse balloons, like other balloons, do not show complications and side effects. In other types of stomach balloons, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain can continue for up to 3 days, while in the Ellipse balloon, this rate passes in much less time and much lighter. Even in many patients, none of these side effects are observed. The only side effect that can be seen is irritation and irritation of the throat caused by irritation in the pharynx tube that can occur for a day. The Ellipse balloon can be inflated up to 550 ml and this ratio is very effective in providing a feeling of satiety.

Is Elipse Gastric Balloon Harmful?
The elipse gastric balloon, which can be applied without the need for a surgical procedure, allows the person to lose weight in a short time and to reduce the stomach volume. It is a method frequently preferred by people who cannot get rid of their excess weight with a regular diet and sports.
Since there is no surgical intervention in gastric balloon application, it is not harmful and the risk is negligible. Of course, the important point is that the elipse gastric balloon application is performed by a doctor who is an expert in the field to the right patient.
Accordingly, the elipse gastric balloon does not cause a situation that may put the patient’s life at risk. Nausea, convulsions, and rarely vomiting may occur due to the elipse gastric balloon within a few days after the procedure.
However, if the patient feels unwell during the week after the elipse gastric balloon application, it may be necessary to remove the balloon. In cases where side effects do not adversely affect the patient’s health or quality of life, taking medications prescribed by the doctor may be beneficial.

How is Elipse Gastric Balloon Used?
Within the scope of the elipse gastric balloon application, the patient should swallow the balloon, which is at the end of a thin wire and has not yet been inflated, with plenty of water. If the patient has difficulty swallowing the balloon, the doctor may need to assist in swallowing the balloon with a thin stylet.
After the balloon is swallowed and reaches the stomach, imaging methods such as x-rays are used, and it is checked whether the balloon reaches the correct part of the stomach. Then, the balloon is inflated with a thin wire-like apparatus at the tip of the balloon. Approximately 500 ml of water containing potassium sorbate is used to inflate the balloon. After the required amount of inflation is done, a control is made again. After the controls, the doctor carefully removes the apparatus at the tip of the balloon.
The swallowable gastric balloon application is completed within an average of 20 minutes, and since anesthesia is not required, the patient can continue their daily life. The swallowable gastric balloon has a leak-proof and fusible valve on it. The valve in the balloon melts within an average of 4 months, the liquid in the balloon is emptied, and the shrinking balloon is discharged from the intestines through the urinary system. It is a frequently preferred and comfortable method since anesthesia and endoscopy are not required during the placement and removal of the gastric balloon.
Who is Eligible for Elipse Gastric Balloon?
Although the elipse gastric balloon is an extremely comfortable procedure, it is not a method that can be applied to every patient with an overweight or obese abdomen. The most important factor to be considered during the decision to apply a gastric balloon is the patient’s body mass index. In patients with a body mass index below 30 or above 40, it may be necessary to apply alternative treatment methods first.
The general opinion is that the elipse swallowable gastric balloon is an ideal method for people who meet the necessary conditions and whose body mass index is between 27 and 40. It should be noted that although body mass index is one of the most important criteria in deciding on elipse gastric balloon application, it is not decisive.
However, an elipse gastric balloon can be applied to people who do not meet these criteria but need to lose weight in a short time due to various health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, if appropriate for the patient.
How to Eat After Elipse Gastric Balloon?
The gastric balloon takes up space in the stomach, reduces the stomach volume and minimizes the secretion of ghrelin, the hunger hormone, due to its location. Thus, the patient easily applies their diet and loses weight. In order for the patient to lose weight in a healthy way, a diet rich in protein and a balanced diet of carbohydrates and fats should be followed. This means maintaining lean body weight and losing weight from fat. One of the biggest benefits of the process, which started with the elipse gastric balloon application, for the patient is changing the wrong eating behaviors and gaining healthy and sustainable habits.
After the gastric balloon application, the nutrition process proceeds in 3 stages. A liquid nutrition program should be applied for the first 3 days following the operation. For the next 3 days, puree-like foods are consumed, and it is possible to switch to solid nutrition 6 days after the application, depending on the patient’s tolerance, which may vary.
During the liquid nutrition phase, liquid and grain-free foods should be consumed at room temperature. It is important to avoid consuming very cold and very hot liquids, and to sip and consume liquids slowly.
During the puree nutrition phase, the foods should be crushed with a fork or blenderized. In the solid nutrition process, a healthy and balanced nutrition plan should be created according to the energy needs that can vary for each patient. One of the most important points to be considered at this stage is the separation of solids and liquids. That is, liquids should not be consumed with solid foods. Care should be taken to consume liquids 30 minutes before or after meals because the intake of solid foods and liquid foods at the same time causes an increase in the volume of food in the stomach and puts pressure on the balloon.
After gastric balloon application, acidic beverages that can increase stomach acidity, fruits with high acidity, alcohol, foods that can cause gas, foods with high calories and nutritional value, and unhealthy cooking methods should be avoided.
Meals should be chewed thoroughly, and liquids should be drunk in small sips. While consuming foods, one should sit in an upright position and food intake should be stopped 2-3 hours before going to bed. Urine should be monitored, and it should be checked whether there is sufficient water consumption. If the urine is dark yellow, water consumption should be increased. The gastric balloon is an extremely effective method, and in this process, help from a nutritionist or dietitian should be sought in order to achieve healthy and optimum weight loss.
